Near the town of Rissani, in the vast oasis of Tafilalt, lie the remains of one of the most important cities in the history of North Africa.

Founded in the 8th century, Sijilmassa was the great gateway of the trans-Saharan caravan routes. Gold, salt, and ideas passed through its markets on their way between West Africa and the Mediterranean.

What Remains Today

Little survives of its walls and palaces. Fragments of earthen ramparts rise among the palm trees, and archaeologists continue to study what the sands have preserved.

Yet the atmosphere of the place remains powerful.

Standing here, it is easy to imagine the arrival of caravans after weeks crossing the desert.

The Spirit of the Tafilalt

The surrounding oasis, with its ksour, palm groves, and traditional markets in Rissani, still carries the memory of this extraordinary past.

For travelers heading toward the dunes of Merzouga, Sijilmassa is a reminder that every road in this region once led somewhere legendary.
