Around the town of Azrou stretches one of the largest cedar forests in the world.

Majestic Atlas cedars, some of them centuries old, rise above a soft carpet of needles and moss. In winter, the forest is often covered in snow.

The Kingdom of the Barbary Macaque

The forest is home to the Barbary macaque, an endangered primate found only in North Africa and Gibraltar.

Families of macaques can often be seen among the trees, curious and surprisingly calm.

They should be admired from a respectful distance and never fed.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Nearby, the town of Ifrane, with its sloping roofs and gardens, has earned the nickname of the Switzerland of Morocco.

Between forests, lakes, and mountain air, the region offers a completely different face of Morocco.
